If someone says or does something mean, we can't exactly assume they are mean. Sometimes humans want the world to be nicer than it ended up being, and they experience so much sadness as a result, that they can't handle all the sadness and cover it up with anger. Sometimes anger is easier to feel than sadness, because sadness is socially stigmatized. So the next time I see someone says/does something mean, if I am lucky, I might be able to imagine that they are more innocent than I'd like to believe. They wanted a nicer world too. A world that doesn't exist, and may never exist.
